Review r1 N1 (Important): the I1 fix made IsDeviceRefusal default-open and
mapped libplctag's ERR_REMOTE_ERR to an answer. libplctag folds EVERY non-zero
PCCC STS and CIP status into that code, including a routing hop's "unconnected
send timed out" / "connection lost" / "remote node missing", and native
BadReply covers truncated / mismatched / unmapped replies - so a powered-off
PLC behind a bridge read as reachable: Healthy, LastSuccessfulRead advancing,
the comms-loss watchdog unable to fire.
Three classes now, each pinned both ways:
- no reply (Timeout/BadConnection/Abort/Pending/unknown): comms fault;
- answered - an ALLOW-LIST again (NotFound/NotAllowed/OutOfBounds/TooLarge/
TooSmall/TypeMismatch/DeviceStateConflict): proves reachability;
- OPAQUE (BadReply/Partial; ERR_REMOTE_ERR/ERR_BAD_STATUS now translate to the
existing BadReply, OPC UA BadCommunicationError as before r0): per-tag Bad,
handle kept, coalescing fallback, never fail-fast, never an answer. Option
(a): a device whose pass/call produced only opaque outcomes is Degraded with
LastSuccessfulRead not advanced, so the watchdog reaches a dead routed PLC.
The probe and index reads classify the same way.
Minors:
- N2: a mismatched array (type vs data file) READS BadTypeMismatch instead of
decoding the file at the wrong width as Good.
- N3: a swept indirect resolution is never reconnected under a forgotten gate;
that one call answers neutrally.
- N4: an index read answered Unsupported is neutral, not a transport fault.
- N5: ArrayFileMismatch checks indirect addresses (the file letter is static).
- Test nit: the evicted-while-waiting test signals gate arrival via a seam
instead of sleeping.
Live: 51/51 on ab_server (slc500/micrologix/plc5 x both transports), incl. an
opaque-only libplctag device staying Degraded with LastSuccessfulRead frozen.

Review r0 M9. The AdminUI form wrote coalesceReads:true on every save, pinning
today's default into every edited driver. AbLegacyDriverOptions.CoalesceReads
is now bool? (null = default ON, never serialised, same encoding as
Transport); the form omits the key when the switch is on and writes only an
explicit false. Persisted coalesceReads:true keeps loading as on.

Review r0 M3. The indirect sweep disposed stale resolutions without holding
their gates, and any reader/writer that fetched a handle before waiting on its
gate could then use an instance a sibling had evicted and disposed - a
spurious comms fault and Degraded. The sweep now evicts under each key's gate,
and read/write re-resolve the handle once the gate is held (reconnecting
single-flight if it was evicted; a retired state never reconnects).

Review r0 I3. The array encoder used the AUTHORED dataType's width while both
runtimes size their buffer from the FILE: an Int array on F8 wrote four shorts
into a 16-byte float buffer and sent it all (garbage neighbours, answered
Good); Long/Float on N overran it.
- The write path resolves the element width from the data file the address
names (N/B/A/I/O/S 16-bit word, L 32-bit, F float) and encodes at THAT width.
- An authored type that does not match its file is refused BadTypeMismatch
before any runtime exists (warned once, no health write).
- The same rule (AbLegacyTagDefinitionFactory.ArrayFileMismatch) backs an
Inspect deploy warning and the AdminUI model's Validate error; FromTagConfig
still accepts the tag so persisted configs keep loading.
- M6: the skipped F1 parity test gains the shapes the write path refuses
(/bit, .sub, indirect, type/file mismatch, PLC-5 native).
Tests: one case per file type, a mismatch per pairing with nothing created,
and a positive control.

Review r0 I2 + M1/M2/M4/M7/M10.
- I2: one health writer (ApplyHealth) for reads AND writes, worst wins per
call: a comms fault => Degraded; otherwise any answer (Good value, device
refusal, Good or refused write) => Healthy; LastSuccessfulRead advances on
any answer. A refusal-only read used to leave a recovered driver Degraded,
and writes never touched health at all.
- M10: a no-reply write STATUS now degrades like the exception path did; a
Good/refused write records an answer on the device's backoff, a no-reply
one a fault (bit RMW included — it now reports its raw status).
- M2: a write inside the device's backoff window fails fast with
BadCommunicationError even when its handle is cached.
- M1: ShutdownAsync/Dispose write their final Unknown only while the epoch
they retired is still current (a newer initialise owns health otherwise).
- M4: an indirect bit write releases the previous index value's parent-word
handle (the per-word RMW gate is deliberately kept: removing a gate another
writer may hold would let two RMWs of one word race).
- M7: backoff decisions read an injectable Clock; the isolation tests drop
their stopwatch asserts and cross the window on a manual clock.

Review r0 I1. On the default libplctag transport a PLC refusal (non-zero PCCC
STS, e.g. an element past the end of the file; or a CIP error) arrives as
ERR_REMOTE_ERR / ERR_BAD_STATUS, which fell into the BadConnection default: a
no-reply comms fault. A coalesced block with one such member then failed as a
group every poll, and two refused tags in a row opened the device's fail-fast
window against a device that was answering.
- LibplctagLegacyStatusTranslation maps ERR_REMOTE_ERR / ERR_BAD_STATUS to the
existing AbStatus.DeviceStateConflict (BadDeviceFailure): "reachable, refused
the operation". No new AbStatus value (Driver.Ab.Transport is Lane K's).
- IsNoReply (Timeout / BadConnection / Abort / Pending / unknown codes) is now
the ONLY comms-fault class; IsDeviceRefusal is every other non-Ok status
except Unsupported (BadReply / Partial included: a reply arrived).
- A coalesced block refused with ANY returned status falls back to per-member
reads in the same pass; the shape is remembered only after a repeat, and the
refused block's handle is always evicted (M5).
- A runtime status Unsupported is neutral (keeps the handle); the probe no
longer counts it as a fault.
- Refusal warnings log the status actually answered (M8).
Live: the new past-end-of-file ab_server case fails on libplctag with the old
translation and passes with it, on slc500/micrologix/plc5 x both transports.

Dead config field (user decision: wire them all): the AdminUI form authors
probeTimeoutSeconds ("Admin UI probe timeout", default 5) but AbLegacyDriverProbe
never read it, so Test Connect always ran on the caller's budget. It now

Review 02 P1 / Wave 2 rule (d): AbLegacy runs PollGroupEngine but raised only
the per-tag OnDataChange, so every changed tag paid its own trip through the

(one per poll cycle), alongside the per-tag event for legacy consumers.

Review 07 P7 (rest): adjacent words on one data file were never coalesced
(one round trip per tag) although the array path proves the transport can read
a span. Within a device pass, scalar tags on one N/B/F/L file within 8
elements of each other (block <= 200 data bytes, under the 236-byte typed-read
limit) now ride one multi-element read and are decoded from their offsets with
exactly the CLR types the single-tag path returns (int / float / bool).
Only shapes the single path decodes identically are coalesced: indirect,
sub-element, array, file-number-less (S:/I:/O:) and width-mismatched tags keep
the single path. A block the device refuses (an authored element past the end
of the file, a native PLC-5 non-N file) falls back to per-tag reads for its
members and its shape is remembered; a comms fault fails the members together.
New driver-config key coalesceReads (default true) with an AdminUI switch
(Razor change: AbLegacyDriverForm, for the Wave 4 live check). Adds an
env-gated ab_server parity case (coalesced == per-tag values).

Review 07 P7 (High): reads walked every reference of every device serially
with no backoff, so a dead device cost Timeout per tag per poll (50 tags x 2 s
= 100 s) and starved every healthy device long enough to trip the comms-loss
watchdog against a reachable one.
- ReadAsync buckets references by device and reads up to 8 devices
concurrently; each device's tags are still read in order.
- Each device has a ConnectionBackoff (1 s doubling to 30 s). Two consecutive
comms faults mark it down: the rest of that pass and every later pass fail
fast with BadCommunicationError and touch no wire until the window expires or
any answer (data path or probe) resets it. One timing-out tag does not
blacken its answering siblings.
- Cold connects are single-flight per device (ConnectGate), replacing the
per-key creation locks; a cached handle never touches the gate.
- A status/exception proving the device ANSWERED with a deterministic refusal
(not found, not allowed, out of bounds, type/size mismatch) is per-tag Bad,
keeps its handle, warns once per tag and advances LastSuccessfulRead instead
of evicting and degrading. Writes classify the same way.
- Health is written once per read: Degraded if any device faulted, Healthy if
anything read Good, LastSuccessfulRead advanced when any device answered.
Adds an env-gated ab_server case with a blackholed sibling device.

Review 07 U10 (user decision: implement array encode now). Both runtimes
encoded a scalar for an array tag: an int[] threw InvalidCastException into
BadTypeMismatch + Degraded, a scalar wrote element 0 natively, and libplctag's
SetInt32(0, ..) re-sent the stale last-read buffer for elements 1..n-1.
IAbLegacyTagRuntime gains EncodeArray; both runtimes write every element at
the element width (Int/AnalogInt 2 bytes, Long/Float 4). The driver converts
the written value before any runtime exists: each element is converted, not
exact-matched (ScadaBridge writes int[] to Int16 nodes), a length other than
the tag's element count is BadOutOfRange, an overflowing element is
BadOutOfRange, a non-array or non-numeric payload is BadTypeMismatch, and a Bit
array (bit-packed words; an encode would clobber neighbour bits) is
BadNotSupported. None of these touch health or the wire. Adds an env-gated
ab_server round trip for an N-file array write.

Review 07 H16: an array of String/Timer/Counter/Control passed the mapper, so
every poll created a handle (one init read), the decode threw
NotSupportedException, the generic catch evicted the handle and latched
Degraded. FromTagConfig now rejects that combination (the skip carries the
reason, Inspect/deploy gate and the AdminUI model state it), and a runtime
NotSupportedException on read or write is BadNotSupported: handle kept, no
health write, one Warning per tag and operation. Write refusals (native PLC-5

Review 07 L7: each index value an indirect tag (N7:[N7:0]) swept through left a
per-runtime and a creation SemaphoreSlim in the device's gate tables until

handle, and sweeps any other stale resolution of the same tag a concurrent
reader cached, so the tables stay bounded by the authored set.

Review 07 H13: _devices and _tagsByRawPath were plain dictionaries cleared and
refilled in place while the retained poll loop, the actor's GetHostStatuses and
server reads enumerated them. Both are now built locally and published by
reference under a lifecycle lock; teardown swaps in empty tables.
Lane A contract: ShutdownAsync and Dispose each retire a disjoint set of device
states, so Dispose running concurrently with a still-joining ShutdownAsync is
safe. A lifecycle epoch makes an InitializeAsync that the runtime abandoned
(overlapping the next ShutdownAsync) refuse to publish its tables, start probe
loops or write health. A runtime cached on an already-retired device state by an
in-flight read is disposed instead of leaked, and late reads/writes no longer
overwrite shutdown's health. Per-key semaphores are no longer disposed under
callers that may still hold them.

Review M1: round 1 refused only the rewritten status bits, so S:/O:/I: writes - which
never worked on libplctag because tag creation failed - would have started reaching
the PLC (outputs, status-file words) on the default transport. WriteRefusal now keys
on LibplctagLegacyName.IsTranslated: file number supplied (S/O/I, incl. bit writes
like O:0/3, refused ahead of the parent-word RMW) or status bit rewritten. Reads
unaffected. Docs/comments now true; gate doc notes R bit-number wire evidence is

The read translation R6:0.DN -> R6:0.CON/13 made those names parse in libplctag, which
would have turned a write - previously impossible, tag creation failed - into a masked
write to the control word. LibplctagLegacyTagRuntime.WriteRefusal (via
IAbLegacyTagFactory.WriteRefusal, same plumbing as native) now refuses writes to every
rewritten status bit (R EN/EU/DN/EM/ER/UL/IN/FD, C UA) with BadNotSupported before a
runtime is created; the runtime also refuses as defence in depth. Reads stay
translated. T/C status bits libplctag parses itself keep their pre-existing behaviour.

libplctag 2.6.0 (bundled by libplctag 1.5.2 / NativeImport 1.0.41) pccc.c needs an
explicit file number (parse_pccc_file_num; S is only the status file when a digit
follows) and has no R-file status-bit mnemonics (sub_element_lookup: con/len/pos only;
a /bit is refused on a 6-byte element). So the canonical S:0 (the default probe),
O:0/3, I:0/0 and R6:0.DN failed with BadCommunicationError on a real MicroLogix 1400
while native read them.
LibplctagLegacyName (libplctag adapter only) now emits S2:/O0:/I1: (the native
encoder's implicit file numbers) and R6:0.CON/<bit> for status bits libplctag lacks
(R EN/EU/DN/EM/ER/UL/IN/FD, C UA), bit numbers taken from the native table. The
authored grammar is unchanged. Unit tests pin the translation per family and check,
through a model of the pccc.c parser, that the translated name addresses exactly
what the native encoder does (46 fail without the fix). Live: Z-33323 idle, reads
only - libplctag now equals native for S/O/I/R status bits; controls unchanged.

A first-touch native write to a T/C/R status-bit sub-element (T4:0.DN) created
and initialised the tag's runtime before the runtime's write refusal could fire;
the init is one READ, so against a device lacking the file (the ab_server
fixture has no T/C/R) it surfaced as BadCommunicationError + Degraded health
instead of BadNotSupported. The bit-RMW path was not involved: AbLegacyAddress
rejects sub-element + /N, so a status bit's BitIndex is always null.
NativeAbLegacyTagRuntime.WriteRefusal is now the single predicate (status bit
by address whatever the authored type; any PLC-5 write), asked by the driver via
IAbLegacyTagFactory.WriteRefusal (default null, so libplctag is unchanged)
before EnsureTagRuntimeAsync and ahead of the bit-RMW branch.

#570
- STRING: the built-in 88-byte Logix STRING holds 82 characters (LEN + DATA[82] + 2 pad), not 84; the
write still sends the whole 88-byte structure and a read never decodes the pad as characters.
- Mistype churn: a type refusal (CIP 0xFF/0x2107) on the existence read no longer throws from
InitializeAsync, so the runtime is not disposed/re-created (and re-Forward-Opened) every poll; the driver
also keeps a runtime that throws TypeMismatch from init and records the device as reachable.
- Malformed tag name: a TagPath that does not parse, or a name the CIP symbolic encoder refuses (now also
non-ASCII, empty member, >255-char member, unterminated subscript), is AbCipTagConfigurationException ->
per-tag BadConfigurationError (named const in AbCipStatusMapper), warned once, never feeding the device
backoff or health; siblings keep reading. A malformed probe tag no longer feeds the backoff either.
- Micro800 BYTE/WORD/LWORD (0xD1/0xD2/0xD4) are type-checked as integers of their width: REAL/LREAL or a
narrower integer over LWORD is TypeMismatch, not decoded garbage.
#579
- ConnectionLease.ReleaseInBackground: one non-blocking release shape for both native AB runtimes. The
AbCip runtime's Dispose no longer waits up to 2 s under the per-tag lock; the pool still registers the
close synchronously so a re-create cannot overlap it. Offline soak tests (25 cycles, AbCip + AbLegacy)
prove no leaked connection; FakeEipServer gains OpenConnections.

HandleOf cast the reflected nativeTagHandle with (int) and was called
inside the runtimes' catch blocks, so a libplctag bump that retyped the
field would replace every create failure with an InvalidCastException.
The field is now accepted only if it is still an int (otherwise
CanReadHandles is false and orphans are rooted), and HandleOf never
throws. Both projects pin the field type explicitly.

On a wire the native PCCC path is proven only for N-file reads/writes and
one F8 read (ab_server). An absent transport key now resolves to Libplctag
for every family; explicit Native still wins and still warns once per
instance on PLC-5/LogixPccc. AdminUI dropdown, CLI help, evidence claims
(PcccFileType, AbLegacy.md wire-evidence table, release note) corrected:
S:0 (default probe) and B/T/C/R/S/L/ST/A/O/I are unverified natively.
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Ef2ozxS7QPanGT8uoATbTe
Native is the default, so a locally refused write must not look like a comms fault.
- AbLegacy: an AbTransportException with AbStatus.Unsupported (status-bit sub-element writes, PLC-5
non-N reads, all PLC-5 writes; libplctag's ErrorUnsupported maps here too) now returns
BadNotSupported on both the read and the write path (incl. the bit-RMW path). The tag handle is
not evicted and driver health is not touched. A native runtime whose init read is refused locally
is CACHED rather than disposed, so a poll of a refused tag does not re-create (and re-lease the
pooled connection) every cycle.
- AbCip: the same mapping on the write path and both read paths (single + whole-UDT).
- Uses the existing named BadNotSupported constants (StatusCodeParityTests guard).
- Tests (falsified by disabling the mapping, and separately the keep-on-refusal): status-bit
writes and PLC-5 read/write through the driver over the native runtime — BadNotSupported, zero
wire requests, one create, health unchanged; AbCip refused read/write via a refusing fake plus a
control that a non-refusal failure still evicts and degrades.
- Docs/CLAUDE.md: BadNotSupported; #571 known-gap wording removed.
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Ef2ozxS7QPanGT8uoATbTe
- I1: the upgrade restart itself moves every no-key AbCip/AbLegacy driver to Native (every process
start constructs drivers, incl. boot-from-cache). Docs + CLAUDE.md now say so and tell operators
to set "transport": "Libplctag" BEFORE upgrading (older builds ignore the unknown key).
- I2: AbLegacy release note leads with the status-bit write refusal (T4:0.DN, C5:0.CU, R6:0.EN, ...)
on defaulted SLC/MicroLogix drivers and the fallback. The real client status is
BadCommunicationError, not BadNotSupported (the driver's write catch-all maps the runtime's
AbTransportException like any transport failure, as #571 does for PLC-5), with handle eviction
and Degraded health; pinned by a driver-level test (no 0xAA write on the wire, with a positive
control). ST string byte order stated as unverified. Also corrects the docs' "T4:0/DN" examples:
the driver's address grammar is "T4:0.DN" ("/DN" is a malformed address).
- I3: DriverProbeHandshakeE2eTests' two AbCip probe tests are a [Theory] over Native and
Libplctag. Run against ab_server controllogix: all 4 rows pass with identical exact messages.
- M1: documented (docs + resolver XML doc): the AdminUI merges only the probed device, so a
mixed-family defaulted AbLegacy driver can probe Native while running Libplctag.
- M2: factory ParseEnum rejects undefined integer strings ("7") via Enum.IsDefined (both drivers).
- M3: AbCip driver-level bad value reads "AB CIP config in '<id>' has unknown Transport ..."; the
named constant is gone (tagName: null now means driver-level).
- M4: the explicit-Native limited-family Warning is once per instance, not per (re)init.
- Nit: EffectiveTransport docs note that injected factories bypass it.

Task 22 (spec section 8 P5), with the controller rulings that exclude PLC-5 and LogixPccc.
- Transport is nullable on both option records; null (key absent) means "use the default" and is
never serialized. Factory DTO parse: absent -> null; a bad value still fails via ParseEnum.
- One resolver per driver (AbCipTransportResolver / AbLegacyTransportResolver), used by the driver
constructor, the Test Connect probe and (through the driver) the CLI.
AbCip: null -> Native. AbLegacy: null -> Native unless any device is Plc5 or LogixPccc, then the
whole driver resolves to Libplctag. Explicit values always win; explicit Native with a
Plc5/LogixPccc device logs one Warning at init.
- Init log shows configured vs effective, e.g. transport=Native (default).
- AdminUI forms: "Default (...)" / "Native (managed)" / "libplctag (fallback)". Default omits the
key on save (reverses Task 19's explicit re-emit, which would have pinned every edited driver).
- CLIs: --transport default|native|libplctag, default "default" via the resolver, so
--plc-type Plc5 with no --transport runs libplctag.
- Tests pinned to Libplctag where a default-path runtime was created: found by instrumenting the
native factories with the current xUnit test name (one unit test, AbLegacyReinitConfigAdoption;
plus the two fixture-gated AbCip probe E2E tests whose exact messages were proven on libplctag).
TransportMatrix and the differential harness already pass explicit transports.
- Switch/resolver/CLI/form tests are falsified by mutating the resolver (default -> Libplctag,
exclusion removed, AbLegacy default -> Libplctag): each mutation turns them red.
- Replaces the inline role-name literal in AbCipDriverFactoryExtensions' ParseEnum call with a named
constant; RoleAuthorityGuardTests was already red on the base commit for that line.
- Docs: AbCip.md / AbLegacy.md default + release note; CLAUDE.md AB section.

M2: after plc_tag_destroy, the release writes 0 back to the wrapper's nativeTagHandle, so a repeat release is a no-op instead of touching a destroyed id. The runtimes keep the destroyed handle for tests and diagnostics.
M1: the rooting fallback is now described accurately, as an unbounded leak (one native tag per failed create), not a bounded one. A test seam (ForceRootingForTest) pins that the fallback roots the tag and destroys nothing.
Both pins are red with their line removed. The orphan tests share a non-parallel collection, because the counters and the seam are process-wide.

The T21 press pass 1 test host died at exit with "A callback was made on a garbage
collected delegate of type ...plctag+callback_func_ex::Invoke". The cause is in
libplctag.NET 1.5.2. When a tag's create fails, for example with NotFound,
InitializeAsync throws with the callback still registered. Dispose() destroys a tag
only if it is initialised, so the native tag outlives its wrapper. The GC then frees
the delegate, and libplctag's atexit plc_tag_shutdown raises DESTROYED into it.
Reproduced against ab_server: the production LibplctagTagRuntime with a NotFound tag
exits 134 with that exact message, and exits 0 with this fix.
A timed-out create unregisters its callback but never destroys the handle either,
so that native tag keeps reconnecting for the life of the process.
The fix adds LibplctagOrphanRelease (AbCip and AbLegacy). After a failed
initialise/read/write that leaves the tag uninitialised, it reads the handle through
the pinned wrapper's private fields, unregisters the callback and destroys the tag.
If those fields cannot be read, it roots the tag for the life of the process
instead. It is applied in both tag runtimes, the symbol-listing reader and the
template reader. GetStatus keeps the status the tag held before it was destroyed.
Pins: offline refused-connection tests in AbCip.Tests and AbLegacy.Tests, a live
NotFound test on ab_server, and a reflection-shape pin. All go red with the release
disabled. The differential harness also asserts that no orphan had to be rooted.

- AbCip/AbLegacy driver forms gain a Transport InputSelect; FromOptions/ToOptions now carry
Transport, so saving any other field no longer silently reverts Native to libplctag.
- Both drivers log the constructed transport once per init.
- AbCip factory now takes the host ILoggerFactory (it ran on NullLogger in production, hiding
every AbCip log line); DriverFactoryBootstrap passes it.
- Gate results: AdminUI /run (T19) native, inverted (dead port) and libplctag legs.
The libplctag adapters assigned Tag.Path straight from the device's parsed
CipPath. A device address with no route (ab://host:44818/ - the normal
Micro800 form, and a MicroLogix with no route) parses to "", and libplctag
rejects an empty path attribute with ErrorBadData; omitting the attribute
(null) is what it accepts. So Micro800 could not connect on the default
libplctag transport.
This predates the native transport work and exists on master.
Add an internal LibplctagPath.Normalize helper per driver project (blank ->
null) and route all four Tag constructions through it (AbCip tag runtime,
symbol-list enumerator, template reader; AbLegacy tag runtime). The runtime
tag construction is extracted to an internal BuildTag so tests can inspect
Tag.Path without connecting. Tests fail with Normalize reverted to identity.
Update the Micro800 smoke-test comment: both transports are expected to pass.
ab_server answers every Execute PCCC with a fixed requestor id (pccc.c
PCCC_RESP_PREFIX: 07 3D F3 45 43 50 21) instead of echoing the request's, so
the R14-3 echo check rejected every native reply sent under the 0x1337 CIP
originator identity as BadReply. The pooled runtime now sends libplctag's
identity (PcccServices.RequestorVendor/RequestorSerial), which passes the echo
check against ab_server and against a real controller that echoes. Pinned by a
FakeEipServer round trip that answers with ab_server's fixed prefix.
