Joseph Doherty 2b1efb5e50 docs(auth): make Authentication.md examples runnable as written 2026-08-18 06:40:11 -04:00
Joseph Doherty f2a422b02f docs(auth): canonical scope strings in the two remaining stale lists
ci / nightly-windev (push) Has been skipped
ci / windows-x86 (push) Successful in 1m18s
ci / java (push) Successful in 2m58s
ci / portable (push) Successful in 8m49s
Both lists predate the scope rename and would mislead anyone creating a key:
CLAUDE.md's Authentication section still named the pre-rename scopes, and
docs/Authentication.md's ops.alice example passed 'read,write', which
GatewayScopes.ValidateScopes rejects outright. Same defect family as the
Build/Test/Run sample fixed in a5f843c.

Recorded as a follow-up: code review finding Server-012 claims it fixed the two
CLAUDE.md lists on 2026-05-18, but neither correction was present — a Resolved
finding is not re-examined, so the sibling Server-0xx doc resolutions want a
spot-check for the same pattern.

Joseph Doherty 1d8a4a6442 test(dashboard)+docs: SEC-25 live-LDAP ACL coverage; design marked implemented
The per-session dashboard event ACL shipped in 693a78d + 7ec0b35 with unit
coverage over a fabricated principal. What a fabricated principal cannot show is
that the group names the shared directory actually returns -- short RDN values,
not DNs -- are the ones Dashboard:GroupToTag keys match. Two [LiveLdapFact]s
close that: gw-viewer binds for real, its GwReader membership grants team-a, and
IDashboardSessionAcl then admits a team-a-tagged session and refuses a
team-b-tagged one; multi-role takes the Administrator bypass. The mapping is
config-side only -- no GLAuth entry, group, or membership was added, and
glauth.md records that explicitly so a future reader does not go looking for a
directory change that never happened.

multi-role is a member of GwReader as well as GwAdmin, so it holds team-a too.
Its bypass is therefore asserted on team-b and on the untagged session -- the two
it would lose if the Administrator branch were ever dropped -- rather than on
team-a, which would pass either way.

One cheap hardening from a prior review: a GatewayOptionsTests case binds
Dashboard:GroupToTag through a real ConfigurationBuilder and looks the group up
mis-cased. The property initializer seeds an OrdinalIgnoreCase dictionary, but
only the binder decides whether that instance survives; if it did not, a
mis-cased group name from the directory would grant no tags and the ACL would
deny with no diagnostic.

Docs follow the shipped shape: docs/Sessions.md gains the session-tag model
(owner-key sourced, immutable, visibility-not-access), gateway.md and CLAUDE.md
gain the ACL in their dashboard-auth paragraphs, and three
GatewayDashboardDesign.md passages that still described the ACL as outstanding
now describe both gated seams and the decision order. GatewayConfiguration.md's
ShowTagValues row no longer claims the redaction is the only thing between a
Viewer and another session's values -- it is now the second of two independent
layers. gateway.md's hub-token lifetime corrected 30 minutes -> 5, matching
HubTokenService. Authentication.md disambiguates --dashboard-tags as the only
constraint flag that splits on commas. The plan doc header is Implemented; its
as-built section 12 already existed and is not duplicated.

Verified: NonWindows.slnx builds clean; GatewayOptions/DashboardSessionAcl/
EventsHub filters 37/37; the live-LDAP suite skips cleanly without the env var
and runs 7/7 green against the shared GLAuth with it.

Joseph Doherty a212e145ac feat(security): DashboardTags on API-key constraints; sessions inherit owner tags (SEC-25 groundwork)
Adds a dashboard event-visibility tag to ApiKeyConstraints, riding in the existing
constraints JSON blob so no auth-store schema migration is needed (design
docs/plans/2026-07-10-dashboard-session-acl-tst15.md sections 3/3.1, open call
settled per its own recommendation). The tag is visibility-only: no read, write,
browse, or subscribe path consults it, and HasRead/HasWriteConstraints ignore it.

GatewaySession gains an immutable, ordinal-ignore-case Tags set stamped at
construction from the owning API key, forwarded by MxAccessGatewayService.OpenSession
from the resolved ApiKeyIdentity — never from the wire request, so a client cannot
label its own session with another tenant's tag. ISessionManager gains a tag-carrying
OpenSessionAsync overload whose default implementation forwards to the tagless one, so
an implementation that does not model tags opens an untagged (least visible) session.

apikey create-key gains --dashboard-tags team-a,team-b (repeatable, trimmed,
de-duplicated; an empty segment is rejected rather than dropped) and list-keys prints
the tags column. No enforcement yet — the EventsHub ACL that consumes the tag is a
later change.

Joseph Doherty 7e7f7cad84 fix(SEC-33,SEC-34): host-meaningful path rooting; verification-cache invalidate race
SEC-33: make rooting host-meaningful and stop shipping foreign-platform literals.
- Delete IsRootedForAnyPlatform; AddIfNotRooted now uses Path.IsPathRooted (current OS).
- Promote AddIfNotRooted/AddIfInvalidPath to shared GatewayConfigPathRules so the new
Galaxy validator reuses them and the two validators cannot drift.
- Remove Authentication:SqlitePath and Galaxy:SnapshotCachePath Windows literals from
appsettings.json; the CommonApplicationData-derived code defaults take over. The
Galaxy default is seeded as a configuration value before AddZbGalaxyRepository
(SnapshotCachePath is init-only, so a PostConfigure mutation cannot compile).
- New GalaxyRepositoryOptionsValidator (ValidateOnStart) enforces a valid, host-rooted
  SnapshotCachePath when PersistSnapshot is true.
- Root-cause the stray junk-named auth DB: host start eagerly builds
AuthSqliteConnectionFactory; under the non-rooted Windows literal on macOS SQLite
wrote it relative to the test bin CWD. The three real-host-start tests now pin
  SqlitePath to a temp path.

SEC-34: verification cache Invalidate-vs-in-flight-repopulation race closed with a
per-key generation counter (bump-before-evict, snapshot-then-recheck). The expiry
cap (window 2) takes the documented fallback: the library verification identity
carries no ExpiresUtc, so the cache cannot cap at the key's expiry (donor-library ask).

GWC-24 rider: cap MxGateway:Events:QueueCapacity at int.MaxValue/2 so the derived
checked(2 * EventChannelCapacity) in WorkerClient cannot overflow at session creation.

SEC-35 (doc-only): note IsProduction() env-name semantics in GatewayConfiguration.md.

Docs updated same commit (GatewayConfiguration.md, Authentication.md) and tracking
registers/change-log flipped (00-tracking.md, 40-security-dashboard.md).

Joseph Doherty df710e18a9 fix(SEC-31,SEC-32): re-partition the API-key failure limiter on (peer, key id) with probe admission
The gRPC auth failure limiter partitioned on the key id parsed out of the
*unauthenticated* token and rejected with ResourceExhausted before VerifyAsync
ran. Key ids are not secret — they ride in every token and are listed on the
dashboard — so any network peer could send 10 garbage-secret requests per minute
and deny that key indefinitely: the legitimate holder's correct secret was
refused before it was ever checked, and the success-path Reset that would clear
the block sat behind the verification the block prevented (SEC-31). The tracked
map was also flushable — any `a_b_c`-shaped junk minted a fresh partition (the
`mxgw` literal was never compared), so ~4096 throwaway tokens evicted a blocked
entry and reset the window (SEC-32).

ApiKeyFailureLimiter moves from IsBlocked/RecordFailure/Reset(string peer) to a
partition-pair API: Check/RecordFailure/Reset(ApiKeyThrottlePartition) with an
ApiKeyThrottleDecision result. Two layers share one sliding window — a composite
(transport peer, key id) partition at ApiKeyFailureLimit, and a per-key-id
aggregate across all peers at the new ApiKeyFailureAggregateLimit (default 30)
that bounds a source-rotating sprayer. An over-limit state is now a valve rather
than a wall: one request per the new ApiKeyFailureProbeIntervalSeconds (default
5) is admitted through to the real verifier, so the correct secret always reaches
the constant-time compare and resets both layers. Guarantees preserved: guessing
stays bounded per window, and the failure path still spends no store read per
attempt.

SEC-32 rides the same change set: the interceptor validates token shape (literal
`mxgw` prefix, >= 3 non-empty `_` segments, key id <= 64 chars) before minting a
key-id partition, each transport peer may mint at most 32 of them before the
overflow collapses onto its fallback partition, and eviction prefers fully
expired windows and never drops an over-limit partition below a 2x transient
overshoot ceiling. Throttled attempts increment mxgateway.auth.throttled, tagged
stage=peer|aggregate only — /metrics is unauthenticated (open SEC-14), so no key
material may appear there.

Docs in the same commit: GatewayConfiguration limiter rows plus the two new keys,
the Authentication hot-path paragraph, the Authorization SEC-11 section, and the
limiter / SecurityOptions XML remarks (the old NAT rationale described the
defective keying). Tracking rows flipped to Done with a change-log entry.

Tests: new ApiKeyFailureLimiterTests (11) covering window pruning, composite vs
aggregate trip points, probe cadence, absolute-block mode, reset across both
layers, junk-spray eviction resistance, the per-peer cap, and expired-window
eviction preference; GatewayGrpcAuthorizationInterceptorTests gains the four
SEC-31 contract tests plus NonMxgwToken_FallsBackToTransportPeerPartition (20
total); GatewayOptionsValidatorTests covers both new keys including 0 as a
supported disable value (66 total).

Joseph Doherty 06e1046317 docs(archreview): P2 doc-drift sweep (IPC-06/07/17/21, SEC-09/22, CLI-12/16, TST-13)
Reconcile load-bearing docs with shipped behavior:
- IPC-06: gateway.md Worker Envelope sketch -> points to mxaccess_worker.proto
as source of truth (string correlation_id, real oneof arms incl.
  worker_shutdown_ack/worker_ready).
- IPC-07: docs/Grpc.md six RPCs -> seven; document QueryActiveAlarms handler
  + validation row.
- IPC-21: gateway.md Session RPC moved from live API into a 'Future work: not
  implemented' subsection.
- TST-13: drop stale design-era sketches from gateway.md; correct the
  single-subscriber-default (config-gated fan-out) note.
- SEC-09: dashboard GroupToRole sample GwAdmin:Admin -> Administrator so it
passes GatewayOptionsValidator; clarify Administrator is the canonical role.
- SEC-22: rewrite docs/Authentication.md to the pipeline that actually ships
  (ZB.MOM.WW.Auth.ApiKeys package + gateway-owned CachingApiKeyVerifier,
  CoalescingMarkApiKeyStore, CanonicalForwardingApiKeyAuditStore, etc.);
remove 18 stale type names (grep-verified absent).
- IPC-17: correct wrong Python generated dir (mxgateway -> zb_mom_ww_mxgateway)
  in CLAUDE.md + 3 docs.
- CLI-12: Java docs Java 21 -> Java 17 (JDK17 retarget for Ignition 8.3).
- CLI-16: docs/ClientPackaging.md reconciled with real .slnx, Python package
name, and gradle project names; fix stale generateProto task name.

Docs-only; type/path/version claims verified against source.

Gateway-side follow-up to the shared auth-lib expiry core (delivered via G-2):

- apikey create-key gains optional --expires — absolute ISO-8601 UTC or relative
<N>d/<N>h from now; omitted means non-expiring (opt-in, unchanged default).
Threaded ApiKeyAdminCommand -> parser -> runner into the library's
CreateKeyAsync(..., expiresUtc, ...). list-keys shows an expiry column and an
  active/expired/revoked status.
- Dashboard API Keys page surfaces expiry: an Expires column (Never when unset)
and a status badge reading Expired (red) / Expiring (<=7d, amber) / Revoked /
  Active. DashboardApiKeySummary.ExpiresUtc projected in DashboardSnapshotService;
  StatusBadge maps the new states.

Tests: parser (absolute/relative/invalid/none) + end-to-end past-expiry rejection
through the live verifier; dashboard summary suite green. Docs: Authentication.md
(verification-flow expiry step, CLI table + examples, dashboard badge).

Closes the tracked SEC-10 polish (SEC-10 core was already Done).

Joseph Doherty 17f16ea181 fix(archreview): security authz+hub cluster (SEC-07/05/08/11) + validation hardening
SEC-07: add QueryActiveAlarmsRequest -> events:read scope arm; fix two tests that
  constructed StreamAlarmsRequest instead of QueryActiveAlarmsRequest.
SEC-05: shorten hub-token lifetime 30m -> 5m; document that the ?access_token= query
  carriage must never be request-logged.
SEC-08: gateway-side CachingApiKeyVerifier (short TTL, keyed on a hash of the presented
secret) skips the per-call store read+last_used write; CoalescingMarkApiKeyStore bounds
last_used writes to <=1/key/min; identity constraints are cached. Invalidation is wired
at the gateway admin sites (revoke/rotate/delete); short TTL backstops out-of-process CLI.
SEC-11: fixed-window rate limit on POST /auth/login + a per-peer (key-id) failure limiter
checked before VerifyAsync; new MxGateway:Security options bound + validated.

Also fixes regressions from the SEC-01/04/06 commit (c185f62) that a narrow test filter
missed (all now covered by a full-suite checkpoint):
- Rooting check is cross-platform: accepts Windows C:\/UNC forms on Unix so the shipped
appsettings path validates on the macOS dev box, still rejecting bare filenames.
- AddGatewayConfiguration TryAdds a non-production IHostEnvironment fallback so the validator
resolves in minimal test/tooling containers; the real host + apikey CLI register the actual
  environment first (TryAdd no-op there).
- Test assembly defaults ASPNETCORE_ENVIRONMENT=Development (ModuleInitializer) so full-host
tests exercise wiring instead of tripping the SEC-04/06 production guards.
- GatewayOptionsTests asserts the SEC-01 CommonApplicationData-derived default (platform-correct).

archreview: SEC-07/05/08/11 (P1). Verified: NonWindows build clean; full gateway suite
747 passed / 42 failed, where all 42 are the pre-existing macOS named-pipe-harness failures
(Unix-socket path limit) and 0 are validation/regression failures.

Joseph Doherty c185f621a4 fix(archreview): security config guards (SEC-01/04/06)
- SEC-01: derive AuthenticationOptions.SqlitePath / TlsOptions.SelfSignedCertPath
defaults from SpecialFolder.CommonApplicationData (was Windows-literal strings
that became CWD-relative files off-Windows); validator rejects non-rooted
overrides; delete the stray C:\ProgramData\...gateway-auth.db files that
materialized under src/; add a tree-hygiene test failing on any *.db under src/.
- SEC-04: GatewayOptionsValidator fails startup when IsProduction() && DisableLogin.
- SEC-06: validator rejects LDAP Transport=None in Production; document the
  MxGateway__Ldap__ServiceAccountPassword env override + dev-credential rotation.

Galaxy SnapshotCachePath rooting could not be validator-enforced (bound by the
external GalaxyRepository package, not GatewayOptions) — documented instead.

archreview: SEC-01/04/06 (P1). Verified on the Auth-0.1.4 baseline: Server build
clean, GatewayOptionsValidator + GatewayTreeHygiene tests 53/53.

Joseph Doherty e80f3c70b6 docs: cover admin dashboard actions + API key Delete
Update the design docs so they match the implemented Admin-only
dashboard surface. GatewayDashboardDesign now documents the Close
session / Kill worker controls and the new Delete action on revoked
API keys, plus the ConfirmDialog gate for every destructive action.
Sessions.md adds the SessionManager.KillWorkerAsync entry alongside
CloseSessionAsync and explains the immediate-kill semantics. Authentication.md adds the IApiKeyAdminStore.DeleteAsync write path
and the dashboard-delete-key audit event. DashboardInterfaceDesign
drops the "read-only until admin workflows have a separate design"
line in favor of the confirm-before-act invariant.

Joseph Doherty dc9c0c950c rename: prefix gateway projects/namespaces with ZB.MOM.WW + sln→slnx
Apply the ZB.MOM.WW. prefix to all gateway-side projects, folders,
.csproj/.sln contents, C# namespaces, using directives, generated proto
C# (csharp_namespace + checked-in generated files), InternalsVisibleTo
attributes, project-name string literals (LoadProject, .sln lookups,
worker exe paths, staticwebassets manifest), and the install/script/doc
references that point at any of the above. Migrate the solution from
.sln to .slnx via `dotnet sln migrate` and delete the old file.

External-runtime identifiers are intentionally NOT prefixed so external
configuration keeps working:
- GatewayMetrics.cs MeterName ("MxGateway.Server")
- DashboardAuthenticationDefaults Scheme/Policy ("MxGateway.Dashboard")
- GatewayRequestLoggingMiddleware logger category ("MxGateway.Request")
- StaRuntime thread name ("MxGateway.Worker.STA")
- appsettings.json root section "MxGateway" + env-var prefix
  MxGateway__... and secret-name MxGateway:ApiKeyPepper
- C:\ProgramData\MxGateway\ data dir paths

Also fixes two tests that were not rename-related but became visible
while validating the rename:

- WorkerLiveMxAccessSmokeTests.ShutDownAsync: cancellation that the
gateway service correctly maps to RpcException(Cancelled) per gRPC
convention was being misclassified as a stream fault. Added a sibling
  catch on RpcException with StatusCode.Cancelled.

- IntegrationTestEnvironment.ResolveRepositoryRoot: extracted IsRepositoryRoot
and made it accept either a .git marker OR a .sln/.slnx next to src/
so the worker-exe walker works in non-git working copies.

clients/proto/proto-inputs.json's protoRoot updated to point at
src/ZB.MOM.WW.MxGateway.Contracts/Protos.

Verified by `dotnet build` and a full `dotnet test` of the .slnx with
MXGATEWAY_RUN_LIVE_{MXACCESS,LDAP,GALAXY}_TESTS=1:
  Tests: 472/472 pass
  Worker.Tests: 280/280 pass (4 dev-rig [Fact(Skip=...)] skipped)
  IntegrationTests: 18/18 pass
