pre-existing unrelated timing flake (3 distinct tests, all untouched by the
branch, 9/9 green in isolation). Also records the exit-code-capture trap found
in run 1 and its retroactive caveat on Phase 2's check-8 wording.

Merge to master is user-owned — STOPPED at the Phase 3 DoD.
